English Summary

The Kyushu National Museum in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, will present the special exhibition “Himiko’s Mirrors: Triangular-Rimmed Deity-and-Beast Mirrors and the Rise of Yamato Rule” from October 31, 2026, to January 11, 2027. The exhibition explores one of the great mysteries of ancient Japanese history: the connection between Queen Himiko, the bronze mirrors she is said to have received from China, and the emergence of the early Yamato political authority.

According to ancient Chinese historical accounts, Queen Himiko of Wa, an early name for Japan, sent envoys to the Chinese state of Wei in AD 239 and received 100 bronze mirrors from the emperor. Among the possible candidates for these gifts are the sankakubuchi shinju-kyo, or triangular-rimmed bronze mirrors decorated with deities and mythical creatures. Similar mirrors have been discovered in ancient burial mounds across Japan, raising fascinating questions about political alliances, the distribution of prestigious objects, and the development of royal power. Their exact relationship to Himiko’s 100 mirrors remains a subject of historical and archaeological research.

The exhibition brings together an extraordinary collection of 103 bronze mirrors, including 53 triangular-rimmed examples, alongside weapons, haniwa clay figures, and other archaeological treasures. Among the highlights is an Important Cultural Property bearing an inscription dating to AD 240, just one year after Himiko’s diplomatic mission to Wei. A recently discovered mirror from the Tomio Maruyama burial mound in Nara will also be displayed outside Nara Prefecture for the first time. Across approximately 230 exhibited items are eight National Treasures and 108 Important Cultural Properties.

Visitors can also enjoy illustrated characters inspired by the deities and mythical creatures found on the mirrors. An optional audio guide narrated by Japanese voice actor Soichiro Hoshi offers another way to explore the exhibition. Located near the historic Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, the museum is also a convenient destination for travelers wishing to combine ancient history, culture, and sightseeing in one visit.
